4 Movies That Make Me Wish There Were More Movies About Female Geniuses
Us ladies can be super smart narcissist assholes too!
Just a very quick and short list this week - between simultaneously turning my brain off because I finished my draft and yet also needing to do some last notes on it before sending it out, I have found myself unable to string sentences together.
So, behold, one of my favorite sub-genres:
THE ASSHOLE GENIUS THAT EVERYONE LOVES TO HATE AND HATES TO LOVE
How you know if you are watching one of these movies:
it’s about a man
he’s a genius
Other common hallmarks :
he’s a womanizer
he’s a drunk
1. All That Jazz
Did you guys watch that limited series Fosse/Verdon? Not only was it fantastic, you end up with an incredible perspective on All That Jazz. Since All That Jazz was extremely auto-biographical, when you revisit it after having seen the series… it just hits even harder. You have more insight into the relationships and characters. It really does enhance what is already by many considered to be a masterpiece in filmmaking. The film is a knockout in all respects - I mean, I don’t like musicals and I’m on board.
Bob Fosse was a man, he was genius, he was a womanizer, he was a drunk. AND he gets extra points for then going ahead and making the defining movie about himself. What an overachiever.
2. Amadeus
This movie is just… I mean… there are no words. It’s just SO GOOD. I remember being a very little kid and seeing it in the theater when it came out. Considering that it was long and adult, the fact that afterwards I wanted to listen to the soundtrack in the car tells you something. I have continuously listened to it ever since.
Man. Genius. Womanizer (I think? He’s definitely flirting a lot, anyway). Drunk.
3. Steve Jobs
Damn this movie really got overlooked. Danny Boyle at the top of his game found a way to make a bio pic about a computer guy that is riveting and artistic and emotional and unexpected. Steve Jobs was a total dick.
Man. Genius. Womanizer (inferred, I think).
4. Maestro
Honestly, I feel like this movie really got overlooked, too. It got a lot of backlash before it even came out, which is a shame because it’s beautifully directed and the performances are some of the best there are. I’m not much of a Bradley Cooper person, but boy did he direct and act his heart out.
Man. Genius. Womanizer (Really, he was an All-izer). Drunk (might have more drugs than booze, but still).
Yessss, I need this so badly! The Dylan movie was my final straw for the Male Genius Narrative.
Poor Things and Tár are good female-fronted films in a similar vein! In the TV realm, The Great is an excellent depiction of complex political genius 👌
