10 Non-Traditional Xmas Movies
Or, What To Watch When You Don't Want To Watch White Christmas Again
Happy holidays and Merry Xmas to all who celebrate.
For those of you who want to watch a movie as part of your festivities, may I suggest something than Christmas Story or It’s A Wonderful Life? Great movies, to be sure, but I’m guessing you may have seen them once or twice or a million times.
Here are 10 Non-Traditional Xmas Movies to enjoy this season while you’re cozy on the couch.
I love this movie. Love love love. One of my all time faves. The writing is fantastic and the story of how the film came to be has always inspired me:
“Stillman wrote the screenplay for Metropolitan from 1984 to 1988 while running an illustration agency in New York, and he financed the film by selling the insider rights to his apartment (for $50,000) and with the contributions of friends and relatives. Loosely based on Stillman's Manhattan days, with his divorced mother during the week of Christmas break 1969 during his first year at Harvard, Metropolitan tells the story of the alienated Princetonian Tom Townsend's introduction to the "Sally Fowler Rat Pack" (SFRP), a small group of preppy, Upper East Side Manhattanites making the rounds at debutante balls during Christmas break of their first year in college.”
By the way, the screenplay was nominated for an Oscar!
Don’t let the goofy trailer below fool you, this movie isn’t just funny, it’s also deep and dark. A true classic.
Probably my most controversial pick, but I swear this movie is a good time. I’ve seen it almost as many times as the first one (which is a lot) and despite its excess of one-liners, it has naked T2, a former presidential candidate, and a Tom Cruise-worthy fight on the wing of a plane.
Damn, this is a fun one. I loved it as a kid and it holds up.
If you haven’t seen this movie in awhile, do yourself a favor and give it a whirl. A truly special film from Tim Burton’s Golden Era. Nothing else like it.
